How Nigerian residents in Dubai and Abu Dhabi renew a passport, replace a lost one, and get UAE document attestation sorted.

Use this guide when a Nigerian passport, lost-document emergency, or a Nigeria-issued paper needs to move through the right office in the UAE. It sorts the routing question first, then walks through passport renewal, what to do if your passport is lost or stolen, and getting a document ready for UAE use.

Which office to use

Nigeria runs two missions in the UAE: the Consulate General of Nigeria in Dubai, and the Embassy of Nigeria in Abu Dhabi. Both process passports and consular paperwork, so practically, use whichever is closer — Dubai-area residents at the Dubai consulate, Abu Dhabi and Al Ain residents at the embassy — and confirm with the office directly if your case is unusual.

UAE immigration matters — your visa, Emirates ID, or work permit — stay with UAE authorities either way; neither Nigerian mission handles those. Check current wait times at either office before booking travel around an appointment.

Passport renewal: apply online first

Start on the Nigeria Immigration Service's own portal, passport.immigration.gov.ng, rather than walking into either office cold. According to Khaleej Times, the renewal runs in four stages: an online application and payment, an in-person data collection appointment, biometric capture, and collection once the passport is ready.

Data collection appointments run Tuesday to Thursday, 9 am to 3 pm, Khaleej Times reports. Passport collection is scheduled separately, on Mondays and Fridays between 9 am and 2 pm. Every applicant has to appear in person for fingerprinting — the online form alone doesn't finish an e-passport application.

Bring your payment and acknowledgement slips, the signed and dated application form printed out, one passport photo, your expired passport, a photocopy of its data page, and original identification for verification, per the same report. Print everything before you travel to either mission — the offices don't provide internet access on-site, so a half-finished form on your phone won't help you at the counter.

Lost or stolen passport: the Emergency Travel Certificate

If your Nigerian passport is lost, stolen, or has expired with no time to renew before a flight, the mission network's own service description covers this with an Emergency Travel Certificate (ETC) — a paper travel document that allows a single trip back to Nigeria and must be handed over to immigration on arrival.

An ETC is meant for genuine emergencies: a lost or stolen passport, or a passport that's expired beyond the point where renewal is realistic before travel. To apply, you'll typically need a formal letter to the head of mission explaining the situation, a police report if the passport was lost or stolen, proof of Nigerian citizenship such as an old passport copy or national ID, two recent color photos, and a travel itinerary or ticket for departure within 30 days. A minor applying for an ETC needs extra consent paperwork from a legal guardian.

Report a lost or stolen passport to UAE police first, then contact the relevant mission — an ETC is issued only when a standard replacement passport isn't realistically available in time. Book any flight only after the ETC is actually approved, not before; an unapproved application is not a guarantee.

Getting a Nigerian document ready for UAE use

A birth certificate, marriage certificate, or academic record issued in Nigeria usually needs formal attestation before a UAE employer, bank, school, or government office will accept it. The UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs runs the receiving end of that chain: its attestation service confirms the authenticity of signatures and seals on documents issued outside the UAE, generally through UAE missions abroad before the paper reaches the UAE side of the process.

For a UAE-issued document, the Ministry offers a faster digital attestation route, typically completed within two hours during business hours for eligible paperwork. A document that started life in Nigeria doesn't qualify for that shortcut; it has to go through the missions-abroad route instead, which the Ministry says usually takes one to three business days once it's in the queue, depending on the courier option picked at the payment step.

Ask the UAE organization that will actually receive the document what it wants first — requirements can differ by employer, bank, or authority, and that checklist matters more than a generic attestation ad. Start with the Consulate General of Nigeria, Dubai for current notices, or call +971 4 352 2505. The Dubai office is at Villa 14, Street 73B, Al Satwa, and keeps counter hours Sunday to Thursday, 9 am to 2 pm.

For Abu Dhabi, the Embassy of Nigeria is at Villa No. 642/3, Third Street, off Arabian Gulf Road, reachable on +971 2 443 1503, Sunday to Thursday, 9 am to 4 pm. Both missions publish notices on their own sites when appointment slots, fees, or hours change, so check there before you plan a visit around either office.

Be cautious with typing centers or agents promising a guaranteed same-day appointment or a special fast-track fee — the government portals are the only channel that actually moves your application forward. Never hand over your original passport unless the process requires it and you have a receipt for it. Confirm the current fee list and required documents with the mission directly before you travel, since a consular checklist can change while an old forum post or search result stays the same.
