Dubai Fountain shows suspended for 10-day mourning period

Dubai Media Office said the emirate entered mourning on Monday, 21 September. Flags are flying at half-mast at government buildings, and the period runs until Wednesday, 30 September. What's On and Gulf News also reported the fountain pause, with no separate restart date beyond the mourning window.

Sheikh Ahmed was Deputy Chairman of Dubai Police, group chairman of ARM Holding, and President of Al Wasl Sports Club. He was the youngest brother of Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Ruler of Dubai. Sheikh Mohammed paid tribute on social media, writing that his brother was absent from their eyes but not from their prayers and hearts. President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed also offered condolences and praised Sheikh Ahmed's long contributions to the UAE.

During official mourning, live entertainment is generally suspended. Concerts may be cancelled, and state broadcasters often replace regular programming with prayers or Quranic recitations. Malls may play more sombre music. Residents and visitors planning an evening at Dubai Mall should treat the fountain schedule as paused until mourning ends, then check Dubai Mall or official channels before travelling specifically for a show.

The fountain normally stages afternoon performances plus evening displays every 30 minutes from 6pm to 11pm on Burj Lake between Dubai Mall and Burj Khalifa. It can shoot water as high as 152 metres and uses thousands of lights. The attraction reopened in October 2025 after a five-month renovation that upgraded choreography, sound, and lighting.

For now, the practical point for residents is simple: the shows are off through the mourning period ending 30 September, confirmed to The National by Dubai Mall customer service.
