Burj Khalifa

At 828 metres it is the tallest building in the world, and has been since it opened. Almost everything about it is superlative marketing — but the view from the top is the rare case where the superlative is just true.

What to do

The plan

A Burj Khalifa visit is really three decisions — which deck, which hour, and what to do with the rest of the evening. Here is the sequence that gets the most out of it.

    Book a sunset slot, online, days ahead

    The half-hour before sunset is the slot to want and the first to go. Booking online is cheaper than the desk, and a fixed time means you skip the worst of the queue.

  2. 02
    Choose At the Top (124/125) unless you have a reason not to

    The standard deck has the view, the outdoor terrace, and the photographs. SKY on 148 is higher and quieter, with a guided format and a lounge — lovely, but a big premium for a marginal change in what you actually see.

  3. 03
    Arrive 30 minutes early and start indoors

    The entrance is deep inside The Dubai Mall. Give yourself time to find the desk, clear the lift queue, and be on the deck as the light turns rather than after it has gone.

  4. 04
    Come down for the fountain

    Time your descent to catch a Dubai Fountain show on Burj Lake below. It runs every evening at intervals and costs nothing — the right free coda to a paid view.

How long to give it
Plan on 60 to 90 minutes up top, then an hour or so around the lake and the mall. The whole evening sits in one place, which is rare in Dubai.

    At 828 metres and 163 occupiable floors it has held the world record since it topped out in 2009. Nothing completed since has come close, and the next contenders are still under construction.

    Three decks, three very different visits
    At the Top sits on levels 124 and 125 — the standard, cheaper visit. At the Top SKY is far higher on level 148 and runs a guided, lounge-style format at a premium. The gap in price is large; the gap in view is smaller than the price suggests.

    Sunset is the slot everyone wants
    The half-hour either side of sunset is the best light and the first to sell out. Book it days ahead online; walking up for a sunset slot on the day is how people end up paying peak rates for a mid-afternoon haze.

    The fountain show is at its feet, and free
    The Dubai Fountain runs on Burj Lake directly below the tower every evening. Time your descent to catch a show from the promenade — it is the best free half-hour in Downtown.
Getting in

Tickets, honestly

Honest answer: the price swings more than almost any attraction in the city, so the move is to buy online and buy early. The off-peak floor is around 169 dirhams for At the Top; prime sunset slots cost noticeably more, and the level 148 SKY experience is in a different bracket again. The day-of walk-up desk inside the mall charges the most and offers the worst slots, because the good times have already gone online. If the view is the point, the standard deck at sunset is the sweet spot; if you want it quiet and guided and money is no object, SKY is the splurge.

The counterpoint

What we’d skip

The day-of walk-up ticket, and any afternoon slot in summer. Midday heat-haze turns the famous view into a flat grey wash, and the walk-up desk charges peak rates for whatever time is left. SKY on 148 is also easy to oversell yourself on — it is genuinely lovely, but most people would not pick it out of a line-up against the standard deck, and it costs a lot more. Save the difference for dinner.

Nearby

You are in the densest cluster of sights in the city. The Dubai Fountain runs on the lake below; The Dubai Mall is the building you walked through to get here, with the aquarium's big viewing panel free to see from the walkway. Souk Al Bahar across the bridge has the best terrace tables for watching the fountain over dinner. The whole evening — deck, fountain, dinner — can happen without getting back in a car.
