Sharjah will hire 150 passport control officers at Sharjah International Airport from October, after the Sharjah Executive Council approved a three-phase recruitment plan on 22 September 2026.

Council members said the posts will help the airport keep pace with rising flight and passenger numbers, and with ongoing expansion work. Officials also framed the plan as a route for Emirati talent into airport careers, with skills development and progression built into the hiring case.

His Highness Sheikh Sultan bin Mohammed bin Sultan Al Qasimi, Crown Prince and Deputy Ruler of Sharjah and Chairman of the Council, chaired the weekly meeting at the Ruler’s Office. His Highness Sheikh Abdullah bin Salem bin Sultan Al Qasimi, Deputy Ruler of Sharjah and Vice Chairman of the Council, also attended.

UAE nationals interested in Sharjah Airport roles normally apply through the Sharjah Human Resources Department. Non-nationals can email a CV through the airport careers page, which also warns applicants to ignore fake recruitment campaigns that are not linked to the airport.

Student business licence

That same meeting approved the Khatwa (Step) licence initiative for university and higher education students. Under the scheme, students can run economic activity and turn ideas into small businesses while they study.

Sharjah says the aim is practical project experience, more student-led small and medium enterprises, and a clearer path from campus idea to trading licence. Application steps were not published in the Council readout. Guidance from the emirate’s economic and education bodies should follow once the scheme opens.

Housing support package

Gulf News reported that the Council also noted approval of all 6,700 housing support requests submitted by citizens to the Sharjah Department of Housing, covering applications lodged up to 21 September. The Ruler of Sharjah, His Highness Sheikh Dr Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, approved the requests across loan and grant categories.

The wider housing package cited in that report includes:

  • 734 stalled homes completed at government expense for 603.7 million dirhams
  • a first batch of 500 priority homes approved for Dh400 million
  • Dh101.6 million in support for 127 homes where owners had reached advanced construction stages but could not finish

Those figures sit beside the airport hiring decision rather than replacing it. Taken together, the session mixed operations capacity at the airport with student enterprise and citizen housing delivery.

What it means for residents

Flyers through Sharjah should see the hiring as capacity for growth as the airport expands. Emirati jobseekers can treat the recruitment as one named channel to watch from October. Students in Sharjah get a new licence track in Khatwa once application rules are published. Anyone with a housing file at the Sharjah Department of Housing has a clear headline number from the same week: 6,700 requests cleared.

The Council also reviewed work by the Department of Statistics and Community Development on a broader Sharjah GDP exercise. Officials said the review will expand data sources and sector coverage so estimates better capture the size and mix of the emirate's economy.
