Sheikha Fatima expands Emirati Women's Day into a month-long celebration

In a letter addressed to Emiratis, Sheikha Fatima wrote that "our celebration this year will not be limited to a single day." She described the new format as "an occasion for action, appreciation, launching initiatives, and highlighting models." Sheikha Fatima made the change because she wants the day to drive new programs, not just mark a symbolic date, her letter said. This year's celebration carries the theme "We Emerge Stronger and Better." She said the slogan "reflects the spirit of the UAE," one that "looks to tomorrow with ambition and responsibility." The theme replaces last year's "Hand in Hand, We Celebrate 50 Years." That theme marked the 50th anniversary of the General Women's Union's founding.

Emirati Women's Day has fallen on 28 August every year, established by royal decree under Sheikha Fatima's patronage. The date marks the anniversary of the General Women's Union's founding. It is a direct appeal to employers to support working mothers during the month-long observance.

Government bodies, schools, businesses, and community groups across the UAE typically mark the occasion each year. They run exhibitions, leadership forums, and recognition ceremonies. The expansion comes as the UAE Gender Balance Council continues separate work of its own. The federal body is tasked with closing gender gaps across government and the private sector. The council says its SDG 5 Pledge has grown to 80 signatory companies, according to the Government of Dubai Media Office. The pledge is a voluntary commitment. Companies agree to raise women's representation in middle and senior management to at least 30%. Signatories span financial services, insurance, retail, and professional services.

The council also launched a data platform for companies to submit annual figures on women's representation. It recognizes three annual award categories. These are Champions of Gender Balance in Policies, Pioneer of Women's Leadership Representation, and Exemplary Initiative Advancing Gender Balance in the Private Sector. It also introduced a new "Family-Focused Employer of the Year" award. The timing matches the UAE's designation of 2026 as the Year of the Family under President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan.
