RTA widens Ras Al Khor and Al Khail roads, cuts Dubai commute times

Al Khail Road is one of Dubai's main north-south highways, linking the city to Abu Dhabi and running past Business Bay and Downtown Dubai. On the stretch heading toward Abu Dhabi, the RTA added a new lane along one kilometre of road. That took the road from three lanes to four, a 33% jump in capacity. The RTA said drivers on that stretch can expect travel times to drop by about 20% during peak hours.

Ras Al Khor Road connects the Business Bay and Financial Centre area to Al Khail Road. It runs along the edge of the wildlife sanctuary that gives it its name. It got a similar upgrade. A new lane now runs from the Financial Centre Street junction to Al Khail Road southbound. The road was widened from three lanes to four. The RTA said the change cut travel times on that stretch from 15 minutes to 12, a 20% improvement.

Both upgrades are one-directional. The extra Al Khail Road lane applies only to traffic heading toward Abu Dhabi. The RTA did not report a matching change for the Dubai-bound side. The Ras Al Khor Road lane serves traffic heading toward Al Khail Road, not the return route into the city.

Two connected junctions were upgraded as well. The exit from Financial Centre Street toward Meydan is faster now. So is the entry from Ras Al Khor Road onto Financial Centre Street. The RTA said the combined work should shave up to three minutes off affected trips. It should also lift overall traffic flow in the area by around 20%.

Anyone who has sat through the evening crawl on Ras Al Khor Road will take a 20% improvement over a press release with enthusiasm.

The two roads carry heavy daily traffic between Business Bay and DIFC, the Dubai International Financial Centre. Both also serve the Al Khail Road corridor toward Abu Dhabi. Many residents who commute to Dubai's financial and business districts use one or both routes every day. Even a few minutes saved each way adds up fast over a working week.

The RTA framed the work as one of several "rapid traffic solutions" it has rolled out in congested areas this year. It described the goal as building transport infrastructure that keeps pace with Dubai's growth.

The authority said the new lanes build on other recent work nearby. That includes a new exit from Financial Centre Street to Ras Al Khor Road. It also includes a widened Exit 25, which links Ras Al Khor Road to Al Khail Road toward Meydan. Separate upgrades were also carried out around Business Bay.

The RTA gave no timeline for further upgrades on either road. Residents can check live traffic conditions through the RTA's Wojhati app before setting out on either route. That's especially useful during evening peak hours, when both roads are typically busiest.
